I completed a sprint triathlon at the Oro Valley Triathlon. This was a goal I had for myself ever since I had friends participate in a triathlon around 20 years ago. Until recently, I wasn’t in good enough shape to attempt a triathlon. This was a massive milestone for me!

Oro Valley’s sprint triathlon is:

  • 350 yards serpentine swim
  • 14.6 miles cycling
  • 3.1 miles run

My goal was to finish and I finished. I had a “stretch” goal to not stop at all, and I also did that! My times weren’t anything special, especially considering my transitions were quite slow. My biggest surprise was a speed increase from running on a treadmill to actually running.

My training was pretty straightforward and relatively easy to incorporate: 3x week strength training (I already do this), and 1x week swim/run. Seattle’s weather only allowed me to cycle once before the event.

The event itself was cold. My friend and I originally picked AZ as a destination to get some sunshine and a break from dreary winters. Oro Valley was cloudy and rainy when we got there. The day of the event weather improved about halfway through my run.

Overall? I’m thrilled! I am thinking about what I want to do next. Maybe double the distances? Maybe more strength/weights? Both?
